The Landmarks of Jozi project all started with the Landmarks of New York Exhibition hosted by the U.S Consulate at the Women’s Jail at Constitution Hill. TAEP facilitators present at the exhibition started talking to Ismail Mahomed, who is the Senior Cultural Specialist at the US Consulate General. Ismail suggested that we do a project whereby we introduce our TAEP students to the idea of the preservation and appreciation of landmarks in our very own City of Jozi.

A project plan was put together and approximately 25 students were rounded up to view the Landmarks of New York Exhibition. The facilitators were then given training in basic photographic skills, which they in turn passed on to their students, together with an outline on the history of some of the buildings in Jozi. The information session was very successful and the very next day each student was given a disposable camera to capture the historical buildings around them.

One group went to the Market Theatre area and captured the Nelson Mandela Bridge, Museum Africa and the Cell C Glass Building. They were in high spirits and spent time in choosing the angles they were going to use! The facilitators assisted in showing them the landmarks and giving them advice. A second group travelled to the heart of Jozi: The Drill Hall, The Johannesburg Library, Johannesburg Art Gallery and Constitutional Hill. Everyone had a great time and concentrated very hard to capture the essence of these beautiful landmarks.

The exposure to the concept of preservation and an appreciation for landmarks will definitely live on in the minds of the TAEP students. They loved the Chicken Licken the U.S Consulate organized for them and were amazed at the vibe of the inner city and the buildings!
