The history of South Africa is one fraught with struggle. Yet out of that struggle a vibrant energy and an extraordinary determination has emerged. Such energy and determination are captured in two books now available at our bookstore.

DK Arts Bookstore has a range of books for you to choose from. In the past three months we have increased the number of titles in our South African culture and heritage section. We have poetry, biographies and South African history, politics, arts and culture and ‘struggle biographies’.

Red on Black: The Story of the South African Poster Movement is an amazing book chronicling the usage of posters in the struggle against apartheid. This book features posters, banners and murals produced by South African artists and activists. This book reveals the life stories of the artist’s and activist’s stories behind the creation of these posters and the conditions in which they produced them. This book is an important installment in South Africa’s journey to discovering its history and looking forward to its future. It is an inspiring read, filled with vivid imagery telling the story of a people who fought the good fight under extreme conditions. Over 4000 posters were created during the time of apartheid by those opposing apartheid. This book is bound to thrill and inspire all who read it.

Another title we are proud to have in our collection is Edwin Cameron’s Witness to AIDS, which won the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award in 2006. The book chronicles Edwin Cameron’s journey from his discovering he was infected with the HI virus, to learning to live with the virus in his body. In the first chapter he reaches out to the reader with his opening sentence: “I knew I had AIDS when I could no longer climb the stairs from the judge’s common room in the High Court to my chambers two floors above…”

“Cameron addresses the taboo questions of race, sexual orientation, poverty and stigma in the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, writing almost always from a personal perspective, but with an unconditional commitment to social justice”…. Zackie Achmat

This honest account from one of South Africans most prominent HIV/AIDS icons is well written and provides information about this deadly virus that many of us may not be aware of. Cameron’s story of bravery will appeal to a wide audience whether or not you have encountered HIV/AIDS and its effects. He unpacks the issues surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic we are facing in South Africa and tackles them without bias or fear. Witness to AIDS is a story of courage, strife, triumph and above all hope.
