There’s has been a lot going on at David Krut Arts Resource, so here’s a quick reminder of what’s happening right now and what you can look forward to… Cannonball Press and Waddy Jones have invaded the gallery in the lead up to Oppikoppi. Waddy Jones of Max Normal.TV has been making his dassies – the official mascot of this year’s Oppikoppi festival – since last wednesday. Cannonball Press is a New York based woodblock collaborative whose gritty, underground images have made Martin Mazorra and Mike Houston the indisputable kings of scruffy-pirate black-and-white hillbilly printmaking. While in South Africa they have hosted a woodblock workshop with established and emerging artists including Wilma Cruise, Mary Sibande, Lawrence Lemoaona, Bruce Backhouse and Bronwen Findlay. On 16 August an exhibition of their work, and artists who participated in the workshop, will open at the David Krut Projects gallery. In September we will be featuring work by the infamous design duo Ziemek Pater and Carlo Gibson, also known as Strangelove. The exhibition will open on 6 September as a follow-up to their show at Fashion week. For more on their work see http://www.strangelove.co.za In October we will be showing Second Life, work by Eva and Franco Mattes, also known as 0100101110101101. The body of work focuses on the most beautiful avatars or cyber bodies in this cyber geek programme that ‘duplicates’ life. See examples of the work that will be on display at http://www.0100101110101101.org/home/portraits/thirteen.html On the book front we have just printed a second edition of the very important book Mapping Memory: Former Prisoners Tell Their Stories. The book concerns the workshop conducted with former inmates of the Old Fort prison at Constitutional Hill with testimonies collected by Lauren Segal, Clive van den Berg and Churchill Madikida. Currently we are on press with Points for Departure, a book on ceramicist Dina Prinsloo. Points for Departure will launch on 1 September at David Krut Projects with Dina’s large ceramics on display. David Krut Publishing is also producing the academic journal on African art history and visual culture, Critical Interventions, with Aachron. More information on these books is attached below. The two other very important titles that are seeing the light soon, are: Flute (August), the publication on William Kentridge’s production of the Magic Flute, and Taxi 013 Diane Victor (September). We hope to see in our bookstore and gallery over the coming weeks! |
