David Krut Print Workshop has been collaborating with Wilma Cruise to produce three new prints: Harrismith, Chanticleer and I can(t) see. These three works were created to coincide with her current solo exhibition Cocks, Asses, &: I Can’t Hear, and were based on three sculptures created by Cruise. The prints address the issue of communication, or rather, miss-communication. Cruise was specifically interested in what could be called ‘pre-language’, or the gap that must be crossed in order for people and animals to communicate. Cruise explains that these works are “yet another exhortation to listen to the earth, to each other and to the animals.”

All three images are large-scale etchings, and were created over various sessions in the print workshop. As was mentioned in the text on Cocks, Asses, &, process is an important part of Cruise’s art making. Her finished works, such as her sculptures and prints are not the products of a set plan, but rather the outcomes of a process Cruise goes through when creating the work. She will often begin work on a plate, have it printed, and then return to work into it further. She will add to the image over several sessions as she finds that taking a step back from the work and returning to it a few days later allows her to see it from a fresh perspective. The marks created during each phase of her image-making are visible in all the prints, allowing the process to literally become a part of the work.

Cocks, Asses, & is currently on at the University of Johannesburg Art Gallery until the 28th of November.

These works are now available from David Krut Projects, located at 142 Jan Smuts Avenue.
