Taxi Art education Programme (TAEP), in collaboration with Soyikwa Institute of African Theatre, hosted a one day arts festival in Diepkloof on Sunday 9 December.

The festival was conceived by Ricky Bopape, drama facilitator for TAEP, to showcase the theatre production he has been developing for the past eight months. The production called We on Air- Radio Nonsense is a side-splitting look at today’s current affairs.

Radio Nonsense comments on corrupt government officials, kwaito stars and weight loss products in a fun and playful manner. It is a theatre production comprising of music, dancing and interviews. Throughout the show there were peals of laughter from the audience, proving the comedic genius of Ricky Bopape.

Solomon Mabengeza and Siviwe Mapukata of TAEP entertained the crowd with their drumming numbers and had the audience moving to the beat of the African drum. A craft table with home-made shoes by Blessing Ngobeni, art facilitator for TAEP, were on display and drew a lot of interest.

The day ended on a high note with an impromptu musical performance by the cast of We on Air. There was a positive response from the people of Diepkloof and TAEP will continue to promote and encourage the arts in Soweto by bringing entertainment to the people there.

Bopape hopes to take the play to high schools in Soweto and Johannesburg and also the Grahamstown Arts Festival.
