DK Publishing: 2007 Report

Headline News: DKP opens bookstore at Johannesburg Art Gallery

It has been a remarkable year for David Krut Publishing – many thanks to those of you who have supported our activities and shown an interest in our new and forthcoming publications. Undoubtedly the highlight of the year was our publication of William Kentridge Flute, which was very well received (see Andre Brink’s review at http://www.davidkrutpublishing.com/dkp/latest/2007/11/flute-brink/). The book is the culmination of a working relationship with Kentridge that began with David Krut’s production of a CD-Rom on the artist in 1997 and the publication of several important prints. Two years ago we published the book William Kentridge Prints with Grinnell College, Iowa and last year saw the beginning of a very successful collaboration between Kentridge and our resident printmaker Jillian Ross. Ross has editioned several sold-out bodies of work this year at DKW, with more coming off the press early next year.

In addition to the Kentridge book, we completed the first volume of the academic art-history journal, Critical Interventions, a collaboration with Aachron editions in the US. We also did the production and launch for Points for Departure, a book on the work of the renowned ceramicist Dina Prinsloo, reprinted Mapping Memory, a book on the experiences of former prisoners of the jails at the site that is now Constitution Hill and completed a brochure for Wilma Cruise’s major show at the University of Johannesburg.

Light on a Hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa continues to garner praise and is selling well at our bookstore at Constitution Hill. We have begun work on a companion volume, which will focus on the art collection of the Court. This will be published in July 2007.

The thirteenth volume in the TAXI Art Books series will be on the bookshelves in January. Taxi-013 Diane Victor and the accompanying Educational Supplement are long overdue but will have been worth the wait. The book, with essays by Elizabeth Rankin and Karen von Veh, promises to be a powerful retrospective of the work of this important artist.

And finally, we are about to open a fourth bookstore at the Johannesburg Art Gallery! This is a very exciting development for DKP and we are grateful to Clive Kellner for his support of this initiative. We will be testing the waters over the next few months and slowly expanding our list of titles in the store as awareness of our presence at JAG grows. So if you don’t make it into our store at 140 Jan Smuts Avenue in time to do your Chirstmas shopping, bear in mind that our JAG and Constitution Hill shops will remain open until 23 December. We will celebrate the opening of the store in the new year, so do keep an eye on our updates for news of this event.

Once again, thank you for your support in 2007 and we look forward to seeing more of you in 2008.

– Bronwyn Law-Viljoen, Managing Editor
