DKW New Editions opening 2008 @ David Krut Projects

Appreciators of art came to David Krut Projects to view the latest prints by Deborah Bell, Diane Victor, David Koloane and Colbert Mashile. The prints were created at the David Krut Print Workshop (DKW), where the artists collaborated with Jillian Ross the Workshop Manager and printmakers Mlungisi Khongisa and Niall Bingham. Each artist’s work highlighted their special technical and creative skills. Being one of the first artists to print at DKW years ago Mashile has, through ongoing collaboration, become adept in monotype and etching. His latest prints explore the theme of religion. Bell’s drypoint prints, exploring the theme of memory, were well received and Koloane’s cityscapes extend his palette and technique. Diane Victor exhibited highly detailed prints that were created using a variety of techniques. They treat the subject of the curious woman with humour. TAXI Art Books by David Koloane and Diane Victor were on display for browse and purchase. The show was opened with a brief speech by David Krut informing the guests of what was in store. Not only could view the amazing prints, but they were going to be treated to music, in the form of a live band. The background music was a collaboration between the Soweto based band African Sunrise and the Taxi Art Education Programme (TAEP) music facilitators. The invasion of music in an art gallery was a bit unsettling for a first timer like me-but within no time I was tapping my feet. There was a short interval to introduce yet another special item-a young lady who has recently joined TAEP who shared a couple of poems in the loud roaring manner of the Xhosa praise singer.
