Helder Torrao is a fifth-generation Portuguese carpenter based in Cape Town. He creates wonderfully varied and beautiful custom work through an intimate understanding of materials and processes. David Krut Projects’ commitment to local initiatives in design, the arts and related education led to Torrao joining us at the 2011 Design Indaba where his custom made plan chests were on display at the DKP stand. These can be made in variable sizes from shutter ply wood. Torrao’s plan chests are now available for viewing and purchase at David Krut Projects.

ABOUT PRINTMAKING
I would love to do an intaglio print or a set of monotypes at David Krut. How do I go about getting invited? Should I submit some images by email, or drop in with a portfolio of prints?
I studied etching under William Kentridge and Rosanna Mahoney at the Johannesburg Art Foundation in 1979 and 1980. I explored printmaking thoroughly between 2006 and 2010 while teaching printmaking at the National School of the Arts (I retired at the end of 2010). So far this year I have been without access to a press (I have been painting and drawing), but have just started cutting wood for a series of reductive colour woodcuts.
About three years ago I brought in a batch of prints and Gillian photographed them to store on your computer, with a view to possibly including some of them on a group show.
I hope to hear from you soon. I think your whole enterprise is a remarkable one.
Best wishes,
Lionel Murcott
