Hold up the Sun (episode 4): The New Generation (1968-1983)

In this period, the role of students and the youth come to the fore and continues through the 1980s. Anew ideological movement emerges from the split within the white-dominated university student movement. Led by the legendary Steve Biko, SASO and the Black Consciousness Movement take a key role in rallying black intellectuals and students. At the same time, new and unparalleled action from workers create the basis for resistance on an unprecedented scale. This is finally expressed in the student uprising of 1976, a watershed in resistance. The ranks of the ANC are swelled by angry and militant students, ready to die for their cause. But the ANC still faces serious problems, like the lack of rear-base facilities and weak underground structures. A breakthrough is made with the growth of strong , democratic structures- in the factories, the schools and communities- leading to then formation of the UDF in 1983.
