Picasso and Africa

The Picasso and Africa is the most important exhibition of works by Picasso to be organised in Africa. The selection of more than 80 works was shown here for the first time alongside African art objects from Private and Public South African Collectors. The ongoing dialogue with African art is followed in this text, with accompanying essays from various sources.

Picasso and Africa was curated by Marilyn Martin, Director of Art Collections, Iziko Museums of Cape Town and Laurence Madeline of the Picasso Museum, Paris.

The exhibition was presented under the auspices of Honorary Patrons, President Thabo Mbeki of the Republic of South Africa and President Jacques Chirac of the Republic of France.

56 000 people visited the exhibition in the 6 weeks it was on display in Johannesburg at the Standard Bank Gallery (10 February-19 March 2006). A similarly record-breaking crowd also visited the show in Cape Town  at the South African National Gallery (13 April-21 May 2006).
