Monotype Projects with David Koloane and Nelson Makamo; Nathaniel Stern, Wilma Cruise and Deborah Bell in Studio

6th June 2006 | Other items by Administrator

Artists and printers alike have been engaged in frenetic activity over the last few weeks creating one-of-a-kind works and limited editions. David Koloane is working on large-scale monotypes of dense colour and varying textures; Nelson Makamo has begun working with assistant printer Mlungisi on large-scale works in bold colour; Wilma Cruise continues creating unique progressions and small intense pronto-print editions that vary with hand work and overlapping of imagery; and Nathaniel Stern is creating small editions from different processes ranging from chine colle application to double-plate printing and unique pronto print editions. Printing of Alastair Whitton’s varied editions continued and both Johan Engel and Robert Whitehead have been through the studio to discuss ideas.

This week Deborah Bell is working on large carborundum prints with Tim Foulds. She has introduced a variety of colours into her usually muted prints and this, combined with the rough texture produced by the carborundum, is yielding startling results.

Next week I will be working with the 2005 Sasol New Signatures Award winner Sean Slemon on a new body of etchings. These will be exhibited at DKARTS from the 22nd of June and the show will also include an installation. This continues a collaboration with Sean begun with his solo show at David Krut Projects in New York (2005) that dealt with the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the US. See our website in the next week for futher details.
I am also excited to say that from the 8th of July we will be exhibiting a selection of our most recent projects created in the studio. The show will include new works by many artists, including David Koloane, Colbert Mashile, and Mary Wafer. See http://www.davidkrutpublishing.com/dkp/2006/05/david-koloane-monotypes/ for more on David Koloane’s extraordinary new monotypes.
