David Krut Bookstore – October News

30th September 2006 | Other items by

Our bookstore at 140 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood has a wide range of titles that will appeal to a broad audience. Our own titles as well as books from other South African and international publishers are available in the store and on this site. We specialise in books on contemporary art, architecture and design and we are the sole distributors in Southern Africa of books from Tate Publishing, UK, Nazraeli Press, USA and illumination dvd’s of contemporary British art.

The bookstore is an ever-evolving space that prides itself on finding new and exciting books that will interest and impress book lovers. In recent months we have expanded our list of titles; the store now boasts a host of stunning architecture books such as Gandhi’s Johannesburg, Contemporary South African Architecture in a Landscape of Transition and Buddhist Art and Architecture, to name just a few.

A new shipment of Tate titles has arrived, including Installation Art: A Critical History, which is a must have for people who are interested in this medium. According to Michael Newman of the Art Institute of Chicago, it is an essential purchase and recommended reading for courses in post-war and contemporary art. The book is an important contribution to the field.

In anticipation of an upcoming exhibition on British artist Howard Hodgkin’s work at our gallery we have a variety of titles available on this artist, including a compilation of essays on the artist with contributions from world-famous writers such as Susan Sontag, Julian Barnes and William Boyd. Hodgkins is a prolific painter and printmaker whose works have an international influence. We also have his Complete Paintings and Complete Prints.

The photography section of the bookstore has many new titles including Jodi Bieber’s, Between Dogs and Wolves and Zanele Muholi’s, Only Half the Picture. Youth 2 Youth is another beautiful book of photography that looks at South Africa thirty years after Soweto ’76. Young photographers from four provinces were asked to photograph peers, and the results are extraordinary. Youth 2 Youth demonstrates the immense transformation in young people’s lives since 1976.

Forthcoming titles that will be available in time for Christmas:
Light on a hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa tells the story of the most important new building in South Africa, celebrating the verve and iconoclasm of the Court as well as its remarkable ability to embody, alongside those qualities, the gravitas of a constitutional court. It is published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the constitution.

Mapula: Embroidery and Empowerment in the Winterveld is the most comprehensive study of Mapula to be published to date and the first book with an exclusive focus on a community embroidery project in South Africa. The Mapula Embroidery Project is one of the most important community projects in South Africa. The embroideries are dazzling in colour and inventive in design, the embroideries also engage compellingly with social and political issues that have shaped the lives of their makers.

A visit to the bookstore also offers a glimpse of our printmaking workshop and the David Krut Arts Gallery.
