DKW Update – Aug 2006 – Nov 2006 PART ONE

Working with Wilma Cruise

I just realized that my last post was the 31st of July. It seems that the last few months have run away with me entirely and so much has happened in the studio. I am slowly finding my way back onto the computer and am not so deep in the throes of editioning. This period of absence from the computer proved to be highly eventful and very inspiring in the studio and I apologise for the silence on my part. Regular updates are resuming, finally.

Part One: Wilma Cruise’s ongoing collaboration with DKW

The 5th of August saw the culmination of a year’s work in the studio when Wilma Cruise’s first solo exhibition of works on paper opened in our gallery on Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood. The show was a huge success and the feedback was fantastic. It gave us the momentum we were looking for and has assisted and inspired us for the next series of works that Wilma and I began almost as soon as the work went up for the opening.

Wilma’s last project saw us working with pronto plates and monotypes but for her recent work we have been exploring etching and carborundum. Carborundum allows us to experiment with different textures and produces the rich blacks that one primarily finds in aquatint etching but with a twist. Carborundum – metal filings available in coarse and fine grades – is mixed with adhesives such as gel medium and PVA paint and is applied to a matrix, either a copper plate or a perspex sheet. The diverse qualities of the imprinted mark depend on how the substance is applied to the plate. It ranges from a thin, spitbite-like rich quality to a very dense, highly embossed surface of heavy texture. Wilma and I are in the process of finding a mark that will easily translate onto an even larger format then we have attempted in the past. We want to go bigger then 1.4 meters…

Watch this space for new work.
