Democracy X
This publication is a reader and catalogue. It is the companion to the exhibition Democracy X: Marking the Present; Re-presenting the past held in the Castle galleries of Iziko Museums in Cape Town during 2004 as part of the celebrations to mark a decade of democracy in South Africa. It is a written and visual record of the exhibition. At the same time it explores a range of historical, cultural and political matters related to the exhibition but not confined to it. It creates an awareness of and appreciation for the diversity of cultures that make up South Africa. An exhibition essay and a full colour catalogue of the objects, images and installations from the exhibition trace the cultural history of South Africa from the earliest symbolic inscriptions 70 000 years ago to the present. A selection of essays by eminent writers critically explores aspects related to this long journey and takes stock of the last decade. Richly illustrated this publication commemorates the ground-breaking exhibition Democracy X. It re-examines the cultural history and engages with contemporary cultural change in South Africa. |
