As a graphic artist and a creative philosopher, Dan Rakgoathe has few equals in southern Africa. Through linocuts, etchings and mixed media work, he expresses a cosmic vision of humankind through evocative images that reveal a sensitive awareness of the spirituality, the mystery and the tragedy of human existence.
Based extensively on personal interviews with the artist and on letters written by him, The Unfolding Man traces dan Rakgoathe’s life and art in a moving and visually appealing way. The numerous art works reproduced, both black and white and colour reflect the richness of Dan’s experience: primarily as a mystic philosopher, secondly as an African, and thirdly as a human being overwhelmed by personal loss. Many of the works are paired with quotes from the artist about his life and philosophy.
The Unfolding Man is a testament to the indefatigable spirit of a gifted and long-neglected artist. Reflecting on the life and artist is both a humbling and an uplifting experience.
