The Cardin fashion house will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2010, an occasion that calls for a retrospective of the work of its founder, designer Pierre Cardin. Born in 1922 in Sant’Andrea de Barbarana, Venice province, Pierre Cardin immigrated to Paris in 1924 with his parents, who were thrown into poverty by World War I. After working briefly with Elsa Schiaparelli, Cardin joined Dior in 1946 and opened his own couture house in 1950.

He was a pioneer from the start, creating a design-based, architectural fashion with a futurist sensibility. Cardin also had a pioneer’s understanding of fashion’s relationship to new audiences, presenting his collections to large crowds. He was the first to demonstrate that fashion can be both a creative process and a business—and that one man can excel as both a businessman and an artist.

This volume is a tribute to an iconoclastic – and now iconic – designer, entrepreneur, and visionary.

The great wines captivate like lovers with their harmony and complexity and especially their rarity. But what are the greatest among them? In this compact volume, international wine expert Michel Dovaz identifies the finest wines of our times and recounts how they came about. From the legendary 1900 Chateau Margaux to the blockbuster 2008 Pol Roger Champagne, the exceptional wines are mainly French, but also include vintages from Germany, the United States, Australia, Italy, and now South America. Dovaz provides an informative overview of viticulture for each region, addressing the myriad factors that affect the quality of wines from year to year: land, climate, soil, grape varieties, harvest time and conditions, fermentation, and aging.
In the following, newly expanded section, Dovaz lists the best vintages by year. Each entry features a detailed description of the wine itself, as well as an enlightening discussion of the vineyard s history and the specific conditions that led to superior vintages. They are paired with practical pricing information as well as photographic spreads that will provide enthusiasts and collectors with a fuller understanding of these favored wines within the historical and social context of their times.

If David Bailey was the quintessential London photographer during the Swinging Sixties, the photographs he produced in the 1970s reflect a radical reorientation. As can be seen in this superb and comprehensive selection, his subject matter became truly international.

On a major assignment for Vogue in January 1970, Bailey photographed fashion against the dramatic mountain backdrops of Central Turkey. Throughout the decade that followed, he determined to photograph peoples and places across the world that fascinated him. His incisive documents of India, Peru, Japan, Haiti, Brazil and New Guinea, many previously unpublished, culminate in the most political of his reportages – haunting images of the Vietnamese boat people.

Alongside these remarkable photographs, Locations presents the best of Bailey’s 1970s fashion sittings. During this era Bailey also continued as a master of the art of portraiture, his subjects ranging from Salvador Dalí and Mick Jagger to Mother Teresa. His acclaimed television documentaries on Andy Warhol, Cecil Beaton and Luchino Visconti provided yet more opportunities for compelling stills.

American artist Julie Mehretu is celebrated for her large-scale paintings and drawings that layer abstract forms with familiar architectural imagery. Inspired by a multiyude of sources, including historical photographs, urban-planning grids, modernist structures and graffiti, these semi-abstract works explore the intersections of power, history, dystopia and the built environment, and transcommunal identities. This volume marks the exhibition of a new series of works commissioned by Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin. In conjunction with this project, Mehretu established a studio in Berlin where she produced a remarkable suite of paintings that deal with erasure, decay and liminality. Addressing what it means to be an American artist in Germany during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars under the Bush administration, Mehretu’s canvases meditate on the idea of the modern ruin.

How scientific research and technological innovation are becoming key to 21st century aesthetics.

A global overview of the ways in which contemporary artists are using science as a muse.

Some of the most dynamic contemporary art is now being produced not in the studio but in the laboratory, where artists probe cultural, philosophical and social questions connected with scientific and technological research. Their work ranges across disciplines – microbiology, the physical sciences, I.T., human biology, kinetics and robotics – taking in everything from eugenics and climate change to virtual reality and artifical intelligence.

Art + Science Now, the first illustrated survey of its kind, provides a dazzling overview of this new genre of art, showcasing the best international work produced since 2000. Featuring around 250 artists, including Marc Quinn, Eduardo Kac, Wim Delroye, and Olafur Eliasson, it presents a broad range of prjects inspired or driven by technological innovation. Neatly summarising the latest scientifuc research for the lay reader, Stephen Wilson points to intriguing new directions for the visual arts and traces a key strand in 21st century aesthetics.

Stephen Wilson – Professor of Conceptual and Information Art at San Francisco State University.

Through boxes, bottles and bags, we make our products and services desirable in the global marketplace and celebrate our design capability, innovation and cultural diversity. Traditionally a means of preserving, protecting and promoting the products it contains, the rise of environmental issues and globalization mean that today’s packaging designers must do more to create innovative solutions that are also sustainable.
This book shows how packaging design has changed to meet the demands of its new context. It takes the reader behind some of the world’s best-known brands to meet the designers, clients, marketers, technologists, scientists, environmentalists and retailers, to tell their stories about the development of some of the most remarkable packs of our time. Showcasing the best packaging design from around the world and presented through new colour photography, it also features in-depth case studies of some of the most innovative design processes in the field, with interviews illustrated by details about the design.

The first monograph on the female painters, photographers, architects, sculptors, and designers of the vanguard Bauhaus School, who helped shape the cultural history of the twentieth century.

“Although women formed the majority of the Bauhaus’s student body in its early years, the role they played in shaping the school’s radical agenda has been largely ignored. Now Bauhaus Women comes along to correct the historical record.” – New York Times

This monograph—published to coincide with the Bauhaus exhibition at the MoMA (November 8, 2009-January 25, 2010)—celebrates the work of twenty women artists who created feverishly in all the teaching, workshop, and production branches of the Bauhaus—women who should have been included in the major art histories of the twentieth century long ago, but whose names, masterpieces, and extraordinary lives have only gradually become known to us. Recognized figures such as Anni Albers—the first textile artist to be exhibited at the MoMA—and Marianne Brandt—whose elegant geometric tableware have become classic Alessi designs—are showcased alongside previously unknown artists such as Gertrud Grunow, who taught “Harmonizing Science”; Helene Börner, who led the textile workshop; and Ilse Fehling, a sculptor and the most sought-after set and costume designer of her generation. Founded in 1919, the Bauhaus and most of its students were poor and lacking in just about everything. What it did have, however, was an abundance of enthusiasm, talent, and innovative creativity. Furthermore, over half of those seeking to enroll at the school were women. This tornado of the “fairer sex” was initially seen as a threat, and the weaving mill was quickly turned into a separate “women’s facility.” Nevertheless, over the years the mill became a hotbed of groundbreaking production, whose impact far surpassed national borders, as demonstrated by the international acclaim of photographers Lucia Moholy, Florence Henri, and Grete Stern.

Ulrike Müller studied ecclesiastical music, philosophy, theology, and literary sciences in Hamburg. She lives in Weimar where she works as a museum curator and city guide.

Top-shelf magazine meets fine art. High-heeled, fetishistic women parade through a world of Matissean colour. Allen Jones’s use of these apparent stereotypes has made him a controversial figure in the art world. Tackling issues of gender and power raised by his work, and including images of Jones’s source material and his own photography, this is the first publication to survey his career. Jones established his reputation in the 1960s as a Pop artist. Since then he has remained true to his artistic roots, developing and exploring a rich vein of imagery drawn predominantly from the world of advertising and exploring the boundaries between commercial and fine art. As well as investigating his fine art work, this publication also looks at other aspects of his career – his work for the theatre, ballet and film – and reveals an artist who, having been influenced by the world of fashion, has seen his work appropriated by the fashion world.
