Guy Tillim, Congo Democratic

Successive wars in the Congo, one beginning in 1996 and the other in 1998, have left the country devastated. After five years of combat, and an estimated 3.5 million mainly civilian deaths, an agreement was reached in 2003 that called for general elections and a new constitution by 2005.

Guy Tillim: Petros Village

Guy Tillim: Departure


These forty images are drawn from the photographs Tillim has taken, mostly in Africa, over the past fifteen years. Many of these images were taken in the course of photojournalism and, although they are often of harsh realities, they are seldom invasive or confrontational. In these images Tillim looks at situations from the side, as a passive but empathetic spectator, and seeks an unusual yet humane moment to provide a lingering disquiet.
