ARCHIVE_Print Workshop tagged with 'Arts-and-Culture'

David Krut Print Workshop (DKW) was established in 2002 at 140 Jan Smuts Avenue. The aim of the workshop is to provide a professional facility for collaborations between South African artists and local and international printmakers. Emerging and established artists are regularly invited to create limited edition intaglio prints and monotypes at DKW.

A second workshop recently opened at Arts On Main in downtown Johannesburg.

New Works by Wilma Cruise

David Krut Print Workshop has been collaborating with Wilma Cruise to produce three new prints: Harrismith, Chanticleer and I can(t) see. These three works were created to coincide with her current solo exhibition Cocks, Asses, & : I Can’t Hear, and were based on three sculptures created by Cruise. The prints address the issue of communication, or rather, miss-communication. Cruise was specifically interested in what could be called ‘pre-language’, or the gap that must be crossed in order for people and animals to communicate. Cruise explains that these works are “yet another exhortation to listen to the earth, to each other and to the animals.”

Andrzej Nowicki at David Krut Print Workshop

Cape Town based artist Andrzej Norwicki arrived in Johannesburg last Thursday and by Friday had finished his first full day in the DK print workshop.

Deborah Bell at DKW

David Krut Print Workshop has been working with Deborah Bell over this last week. The artist is currently working on some new prints, some of which are an extension of Poet, created in 2006 at DKW. While the other prints will form a new series, they are thematically linked to her earlier series “Museum Solstice Equinox”.

Colbert Mashile at DKW

During the artist’s latest visit to Johannesburg, Colbert Mashile produced four new etchings after a weekend of non-stop work at the David Krut Print Workshop. These new works are still in progress. Mashile works directly onto the plate, with no preparatory material, which translated perfectly into the medium pf printmaking.

DK PRINT WORKSHOP AUGUST REPORT

August has been a very busy month at the David Krut Print Workshop! It began with the arrival of Mike Houston and Martin Mazorra, a.k.a: Cannonball Press, from New York, as well as the introduction of a new project for Strangelove’s up and coming exhibition at David Krut Projects, and the arrival of our new letterpress.

New Letter Press at DK Print Workshop

Unbeknownst to the cocktail-sipping crowd at the pre-Crapalite Walkabout last Saturday, 5 doors up at the DK Print Workshop a bright orange letterpress was being delivered. This magnificent piece of equipment is the latest addition to the workshop, and is currently undergoing extensive cleaning before being re-assembled for use.
