Ron Mueck is one of the most exciting and original sculptors of his generation. His technically brilliant work has a realism that verges on the uncanny, with figures that ’seem to breathe and think and feel: In 1998 he was invited to became Associate Artist at the National Gallery in London, with the brief ‘of making new work inspired by its collection. This video places Mueck’s work in its historical context and demonstrates the links that he forged with the Old Master tradition, as represented in the National Gallery. Much of the video was shot inside Mueck’s studio and follows the making of his remarkable work, step-by-step, from the initial conception to the - finished piece, as it emerges dramatically from the mould before gaining hair, eyes and surface detail.
