Ludwig Wittgenstein: There Where You Are Not

ludwig.jpg

There Where You Are Not is an album of writings and photographs that describe the sojourns of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein made throughout his lifetime, in his search to discover a retreat where he could live and work. The remote places to which he was drawn include the northerly landscapes of Iceland and Norway; the alpine village of Trattenbach, where he worked as a school teacher; and the late refuges that he found in Ireland, at Rosroe, “the last pool of darkness at the edge of Europe”, and County Wicklow. What these landscapes share is a quality of ‘quiet seriousness’. They also reflect aspects of his philosophy and his psychology.
There Where You Are Not relates the success and failure of Wittgenstein’s quest for a ‘house of thought. An album of writings and photographs by Wittgenstein describes his repeated flights from Cambridge; the places that he journeyed to, and those to which he returned in order to attempt new work on his philosophy. This album draws upon important material held in The Wittgenstein Archive, Cambridge-the largest collection of original biographical material on the philosopher-including reproductions from Wittgenstein’s personal photographic albums.
