The Courtauld Gallery at Somerset House
|
The renowned art collection originally built up by Samuel Courtauld in the 1920s, and since expanded thanks to generous gifts and bequests, is now permanently housed in the splendid surroundings of Somerset House in the Strand. This catalogue includes a historical Introduction by the Director of the Courtauld Gallery, which was established in 1931 under the aegis of the University of London, and some eighty reproductions of major works from the 14th to the 20th century. The core of the collection - including many important and popular works by late 19th-century masters - represents the fruits of Samuel Courtauld’s single-minded policy of acquiring paintings by leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists. These extremely familiar and much-loved images include Manet’s Bar aux Folies-Bergère, Cézanne’s The Card Players and Gauguin’s Nevermore, as well as some outstanding examples of works by Monet, Seurat, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and Modigliani, while earlier periods are represented by such artists as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rubens, Gainsborough and Van Dyck. Each of the paintings illustrated is accompanied by a descriptive note, providing the reader with a feast of visual and intellectual inspiration. Price (ZA) R180.00 |
