Saving Water
|
This focused collection displays a formalist interest in the written word, a keen awareness of and willingness to explore the relationships between form and content, with poetic results. As meanings roost in his lines, so Horwitz’s poems take form within an intimately understood South African landscape. One gets the sense of life and letters taking place against a backdrop of a still, almost arid and clearly unpossesable space which is never entirely written but nevertheless maintains an unwavering presence as the site of the poet’s meditation. In such surroundings, the suggestion seems to be, we try to live out our loves and philosophies; in such a context, we are always Saving Water, “purifying ruby running/ day and night through all the seasons.” Eva Kowalska Price (ZA) R120.00 |
