Come Back Africa

Come_back_Africa.jpg

A highly readable account of what was a grueling, often dangerous encounter with apartheid society, Come Back Africa is film director, Lionel Rogosin’s story about the making of this widely acclaimed film, shot in the late fifties in and around Johannesburg and most notably, Sophiatown.

Rogosin’s intention was to make a film that would ‘give a voice’ to the oppressed and, with considerable input from the legendary trio of Can Themba, Lewis Nkosi and Bloke Modisane, writers associated with the pioneering magazine, Drum, he produced a unique and award-winning piece of cinematographic history.

Fortunately, Lionel Rogosin wrote down the story of what he, his film crew and family endured during the making of this important film.

Peter Davis, a film maker who knew Rogosin well, has edited Lionel’s diaries into a fascinating and exhilarating story that is Come Back Africa — the book.
