Hold Up the Sun (episode 1): Roots of Struggle (1912-1948)
|
Ulibambe Lingashoni (Hold up the Sun) took years to research and produce. The series is a record of the resistance against apartheid by the masses of South Africans. It reveals , through interviews and archive materials, the rich tapestry of South African history. This episode acts as a general introduction to the series, focusing on the “Making of South Africa”, through the process of colonisation, industrialisation and urbanisation. Colonial conquest and land dispossession provide the backdrop to the formation of the ANC, in a quest for new unity among the African people. The theme of unity is critical to understanding the nature of the South African struggle and the ANC’s development. Running parallel to the development of African Nationalism and the struggle for a new inclusive nation is the growth of the white Union of South Africa, and the eventual rise to dominance of Afrikaner Nationalism.
