Hold Up the Sun (episode 3) - Submit or Fight (1958-1969)

This period of 1960s is one of repeated setbacks for the ANC. The Organisation’s political heyday rapidly ended when it was banned; its leadership jailed and its underground structures smashed. Its policy of unity in action with organisations such as the white Congress of Democrats and the communist party, led to a split in the organisation in 1960. The formation of the PAC and the use of armed methods of struggles are key themes and many of the critical debates on this topic, in the movement’s history, are dealt with here. The attempts of the ANC to confront and address a new set of problems and a new strategy span over the decade. The result is much experience gained but little progress in this period.
