Hold Up the Sun (episode 5): Not the Kings and Generals (1983 - 1990)
|
The second part of the 1980s is a decisive one in the ANC’s struggle. The episode starts with the mass uprising beginning in the Vaal Triangle and the invasion of the townships by SADF. the ANC’s call is to make yourselves ungovernable and to progress to people’s power. The film explores this development and the role of the liberation movement in the context of the state’s crisis in the 1980s, its dual strategy of repression and reform, and the new condition of struggle that this generated. The 1980s is an unprecedented phase of resistance, mobilisation and organisation. Huge steps are taken with the launching of COSATU, a militant politicised labour federation, and in the 1987 South Africa is rocked by unprecedented labour action in the workplace. The escalation of the struggle inside South Africa makes a dramatic impact on South Africa as a whole. The SADF’s policy of aggression and destabilisation wreaks havoc in the neighbouring states, aimed at destroying ANC support in these countries. Powerful local and national campaigns in the factories, communities and schools, armed actions and the international campaign deepen the state’s crisis leading finally to the unbanning of the ANC, SACP, PAC and their leaders in 1990.
