Foam Along the Waterline: Works by Virginia MacKenny

Foam Along the Waterline is a catalogue published to accompany Virginia MacKenny’s solo exhibition of paintings and etchings at the University of Cape Town Irma Stern Museum in September/October 2008.

Virginia MacKenny is a practicing artist, writer and educator, who is Senior Lecturer in Painting at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town. Foam Along the Waterline contains images of MacKenny’s work - both on show and previous - and three essays that contextualise MacKenny’s work and go a long way in unpacking her delicately associative meanings. Two essays by MacKenny, “Surfacing - Levels of Flatness” and “A Brief Consideration of Correspondence - Some Reflections on Artistic Process”, throw light onto the artist’s working processes and the thoughts and inspirations behind the work. “Virginia MacKenny and Ingrid Winterbach: A Conversation…” by Ingrid Winterbach provides an interesting portrait of MacKenny through the eyes of a fellow artist.

The catalogue is printed on eco-friendly Munken Pure and Lynx paper from Sweden, a fact which highlights the nuanced ecological concerns in this particular body of MacKenny’s work.
