Imagine

Imagine is the perfect gift book for any child. Quirky and endearing, it’s beautifully designed by the award-winning artist and illustrator, Hervé Tullet. A visual and tactile treat, it takes as its starting-point a child’s appreciation of the strange and wonderful world that surrounds us and offers us new and unexpected ways of looking at it.

Seeing Rothko

Throughout his career, Rothko was concerned with what other people experienced when they looked at his canvases. As his work shifted from figurative imagery to luminous fields of color, his concern expanded to the setting in which his paintings were exhibited. In a series of analytic, personal, and even poetic essays by contemporary scholars, this volume explores the profound and varied responses elicited by Rothko’s most compelling creations. This volume also reproduces, for the first time, a “Scribble Book,” in which he jotted down his ideas on teaching art to children, and a sketchbook, both dating to the early years of the artist’s career.

The Turner Book

This is easily the best introduction to Turner that I have read in quite a while. It provides an informed audience with an excellent synthesis of the key issues regarding the artist’s life, work, and era… The Turner that emerges here is one that I find entirely congenial and transfixing and the Turner that a larger public should come to know.’ - Professor Kathleen Nicholson, author of Turner’s Classical Landscapes: Myth and Meaning.

Jake and Dinos Chapman: Bad Art for Bad People

Jake and Dinos Chapman are among the most important figures to have emerged from the ‘YBA’ (Young British Artist) generation in the 1990s. Over the past decade they have built up an international reputation for work through which they have confronted some of the most troubling issues of our time. These have included the endless human capacity for warfare and violence; plastic surgery, genetic manipulation and cloning; the instability of moral and ideological belief systems; and the assumed asexuality and innocence of children.

Permanent Collection

In Permanent Collection, Tim Davies focuses on paintings in museums, photographing them from oblique angles so that existing museum lighting glares off the paintings’ surfaces, changing their often-reproduced meanings. By then enlarging the photographs to the size of the original painting, the light is allowed to do more than illuminate a painting’s image, but instead can obscure, erase, add humor, sadness, strangeness or narrative to objects we think of as fixed and permanent.

I Will Never Forget You…Frida Kahlo to Nickolas Muray

Frida Kahlo was one of the most photographed artists of the twentieth century. Nickolas Muray’s portraits of her have a luminous, painterly quality, described by Siego Rivera as being ‘as beautiful as a Piero de la Francesca’. The love-letters between Kahlo ad Muray reproduced here add another dimension to our understanding of their relationship and cast new light on Kahlo’s life and work.
