Messina/Musina

18th October 2007 by Bazukile Diko (Bookstore)

Musina is the Northernmost town in South Africa. It lies on the Limpopo River on the border of Zimbabawe. The town was formerly known as Messina, and in 2002 its name was changed to correct a colonial misspelling of the name of the Musina people who previously lived in the region.

Robert Hodgins

“Slowly, all these beautiful, plump, female nudes became cumbrous and all the handsome male nudes became heavy and distorted. I may have been quietly changing or I may have been finding what I really wanted to do.” Robert Hodgins

Lulu Phezulu

‘Lulu Phezulu’ (or ‘Lulu on top’) is the name of the home of Leigh (’Lulu’) Voigt, the well-known artist and book illustrator who lives with her artist husband in the house they built for themselves on a mountain top in a nature reserve in Mpumalanga. This treasure of a book is at one level a personal account of her and her family’s move from the city to the country and their serendipitous encounters with nature and the local people. It is also a breathtakingly beautiful natural history notebook filled with Leigh’s watercolours and drawings as well as a wealth of anecdotes, curiosities, lore and legend about the natural world.

The Abundant Herds

This book is an appreciation of the creative imagination and linguistic versatility of the Zulu people. It is a book about human creativity. Not the creativity of the plastic arts, or of music, but rather that of the poet, the wordsmith. It gives an overview of the history of the Nguni cattle and their economic, social, political and spiritual importance to the Zulu people, both past and present.
