We are pleased to welcome Jacki Mc Innes to the David Krut writing page. Mc Innes is an artist and freelance writer, here follows a biography in her own words: “After five years of training in the fields of radiography and radiotherapy, the only thing I had really learnt was that I had made a particularly poor career choice. I was obliged to continue working in these fields for the next few years, but in order to retain a shred of sanity, embarked on a part-time Fine Arts Degree through UNISA. This was followed by a Masters Degree from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT in 2004. In this time I developed a sculptural working method combining metal sheeting, cast salt, found objects, text and drawing. From a thematic point of view I explored the psycho-social realities for women living in South Africa versus the “post-Constitution ideal”. I have exhibited a number of one-person shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and have participated in many local and international group shows. In addition to this I write for a number of publications and have lectured in Sculpture at UCT and The College of Cape Town. I believe that my art can play a role in the ongoing dialogue around women’s rights to determine their own reproductive role, and am currently exploring the intersection between psycho-social factors and the law, especially in relation to abortion and infanticide. In keeping with this initiative, I will be exhibiting a body of work at the Women’s Prison at Constitution Hill as a part of the “16 Days of Activism” campaign this December.”
