The Court has been praised for its warmth and openness, and for the way in which it reflects the extraordinary history of the site on which it is built. Once a reviled prison, notorious not only for its inhumane treatment of black prisoners, but also for the incarceration of such luminaries as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Ghandi, the site is now a reflection of the values of our progressive constitution. The building is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful court buildings in the world, and the architects have won international accolades for their ground-breaking design. Angela Buckland’s superb photographs recording the development of the site, together with editor Bronwyn Law-Viljoen’s beautifully written text, composed from interviews with the architects, constitutional court judges and others, ensures a fitting tribute to the remarkable transformation of the building from forbidding Old Fort Prison to the beacon of hope that it has become.
