David Krut Publishing is proud to announce the release of the latest title in the TAXI Art Books series, Taxi 013 - Diane Victor, which will be launched in July. The TAXI series focuses on South African artists who have produced a significant body of work but not yet had a monograph published on them.

Winning prestigious awards like the Sasol New Signatures, Volkskas Atelier, Financial Mail/J&B Rare Achievers Award for Art, Sasol Wax Art and others, and consistently producing works of outstanding quality, Diane Victor has steadily become one of South Africa’s most highly regarded artists.

Victor was a natural choice for the TAXI Art Books series as she has become one of the most influential of South African artists. She has exhibited widely and her work is held in many private and public collections in South Africa and abroad. She is a highly skilled printmaker who has worked steadily, and usually solo, on her print oeuvre for the past two decades. She is also a dedicated teacher whose students enjoy unflagging commitment and technical expertise from her.

Victor is a superb draftsperson, her many drawings and prints testament to her virtuosity. The figurative works, with their strongly implied narrative, often make acute observations regarding the social ills of South African society, and the images, which are at times quite macabre, stand in contrast to delicate mark-making and the fragility of Victor’s preferred media. Victor has remarked that working with images that disturb forces the viewer to confront certain realities, but is also a form of personal exorcism. Her metaphors are both potent and poetic and, while incorporating art-historical and autobiographical references, show a keen social insight.

The authors of Taxi 013 - Diane Victor, Elizabeth Rankin and Karen von Veh, consider the overriding themes, particular concerns and broader context of this prolific artist’s production.

Rankin has curated major exhibitions and published widely on South African art. Previously at the University of the Witwatersrand, she now lectures at the University of Auckland and is a respected scholar of South African printmaking.
