On Saturday the 28th of July 2007 the Taxi Art Education Programme team woke up very early for an appointment with Roedean School for their annual Community Service Day. The day was for the kids and the team knew that they had to put in a lot of hard work because children can be the toughest critics. The school has adopted three children’s shelters in Johannesburg, and this annual event is organised to provide the kids with a day of fun and games where they can just be kids and not worry about the problems of the world. We of the TAEP team were the perfect people to entertain them, and entertain them we did.

The day started out with the team meeting at our base at Constitution Hill, all huddled into the bookstore, frozen to our bones! Soon we started to thaw and became excited about our upcoming performance. The Roedean School bus came to fetch us and off we went to the school, ready to rock n roll. The walk down to the performance area was a long one for all of us since we didn’t know what to expect, but we were all ready to perform and just needed the word. The play was well received by the audience, the TAEP team put on the best performance.

Now it was time for the real fun. The children were put into groups and were given the opportunity to join in a workshop of their choice. TAEP had a number of workshops lined up to cater for everyone’s interests; drumming, art, dance, drama and music. The day ended with a grand finale of drumming and singing. And we all had a great time and we look forward to being part of the event in the future.

Well done to the TAEP team. The drumming, singing and dance sessions were absolute highlights and went a long way towards glossing over some of the frustrating administative hiccups that were beyond the control of the team. All in all, the kids had a ball, and that’s what it is surely all about!
