Dassies: The Making of

I am the Guardian of the Dassie, so I am very connected to them all. At any one moment in time I am experiencing one of my Dassie’s emotions and powers. Right now, I am very in tune with the Snow Dassie.
- Max Normal

The Oppikoppi Crew and David Krut Projects have some very exciting news to share! With a little more than three weeks to go to the Oppikoppi “The Way of the Dassie” August Festival, you can now have your Dassie and play with it. You no longer have to wait until the Oppikoppi Festival to meet the guardian of the Dassie, the voice of MaxNormal.tv, and the creative force behind the Dassie campaign. Max Normal, the man – the legend – who created Orginal, Lucky, Bubblegum, Cold, Dalai, Puff, Radio-Active, Snow and Rave Dassies will be live, whistling and happily sewing away at David Krut Projects in Jozi Monday to Saturday from 9am–6pm from the 1–8 August. These limited-edition, master Dassies, hand-made-by-Max-Normal-while-you-wait-Dassies, will be available to buy, hot off the press, for a mere R200 each. (A small price to pay if you are an eager Dassie, Oppikoppi and Max Normal lover.) If you are, in fact, an eager Dassie, Oppikoppi and Max Normal follower, you already understand where the Dassie comes from. For those of you not following The Way of the Dassie yet, there’s still time, so allow us to explain.

It all happened not so far in the distant past, when the leader of the Oppikoppi family, Carel Hoffman contacted the soon to be Guardian of the Dassie, Max Normal, to come up with an idea for this year’s Oppikoppi festival. Great words were exchanged by these two influential men and that night Max Normal had a vision. “I fell into a deep state of darkness and confusion. During this horrible trance I received a vision. In this vision I saw a beautiful golden DASSIE floating in a blue sky. The DASSIE said, ‘Follow The Way of the Dassie, Max… follow The Way of the Dassie.’ When I awoke from my trance, I sat down at my sewing machine and made a DASSIE toy that looked very much like the DASSIE in my vision,” claims Max. The Oppikoppi leader and President for Life approved of Max’s idea and that is how the Oppikoppi Dassie was born.
This year the Oppikoppi festival will be focussing on The Way of the Dassie and will - include a few valuable pointers to be taken very seriously by all Dassies. These are of course:

1-Don’t speak that which is not true
2-Don’t take that which is not offered
3-Don’t be a pervert
4-Practice to be psychic
5-Don’t kill anyone or anything*

So before you take the long road to the Oppikoppi Festival, or to David Krut Projects for that matter, (even if you live up the road from the art gallery), make sure you have your Dassie facts and attitude 100% refined. With this said, it’s also imperative that you know what kind of Dassie you are. The Guardian can sew up to four Dassies in an hour. If you do the math and realise that there are nine Dassies altogether, this means that Max can create all nine Dassies in two hours and fifteen minutes. Phew. So, again, make sure you know which Dassie you want to get your hands on first.
Be sure to make your way to this once-in-a-lifetime art performance during the first week of August at David Krut Projects for something unexpected.

We are looking forward to creating a theatre space in the front window of David Krut Projects, Jan Smuts Avenue and having Waddy Jones sewing his dassies. Oppikoppi comes to DK Projects. Within a few days of Waddy starting we will have Cannonball Press from Brooklyn working on a sculpture for Oppikoppi. The world is coming to DK Projects.

  2. Way of the Dassie begins at Dk Projects Says:

[...] Waddy Jones is a musician-artist who is the front man for the band MaxNormal.TV. Primarily known as a musician, Waddy has exhibited his Japanese comics inspired paintings and furry animals with great success in Cape Town. Oppikoppi chose Waddy’s dassie as its unlikely mascot for the 2007 festival. We have invited Waddy to produce his dassies in the David Krut Projects space from 1 – 8 August as a pre-festival performance. read more [...]
