TAEP Arts Festival on Sunday 9 December

5th December 2007 | Other items by Bazukile Diko

The Taxi Art Education Programme (TAEP) will be hosting a mini arts festival on Sunday 9 December at the Diepkloof Hall, Multi-Purpose Centre, Immink Drive from 10 am to 2pm. The event will be opened by Bazukile Diko and Solomon Mabengeza of TAEP. This festival will showcase the talents of the TAEP and will include drumming, singing, drama and an outdoor art exhibition. Ricky Bopape, drama facilitator and Soweto native, has teamed up with Mpho Moloi in putting together two exciting new plays that will be showcased on the day.

Shadow of Trial is a play that challenges assumptions about HIV/AIDS. It is not prescriptive, but rather shows the different approaches one can take when faced with the discovery that one has been infected with the HI virus. These choices are encountered by the characters that represent all the emotions felt by the protagonist.

The second play, We are on Air, is a light-hearted comedy based on the exciting and ever-evolving world of a radio station – Radio Nonsense on 69.45 FM. It is an ‘on air’ play that chronicles the DJ’s daily life, sends up adverts, jingles and interviews and includes live music. Join in the fun and mayhem with this lively work written and directed by Ricky Bopape.

The Taxi Art Education Programme (TAEP) is an outreach programme aimed at empowerment through art. TAEP promotes visual literacy and an appreciation of the arts while also providing initial training for a long-term career in the arts or arts administration.

TAEP provides a valuable support base for those who are interested in forging an arts career but do not necessarily have the support system or funds to pursue this ideal. By conducting events in and around Johannesburg and Soweto, TAEP contributes to inner-city revival and enrichment.

TAEP has eight facilitators who teach art classes, drumming, poetry, singing, dance and storytelling. This groundbreaking programme is driven by the enthusiasm of the TAEP facilitators and their growing group of students and assistants.
