Carrie Moyer at DK Projects New York

Celebrated American painter Carrie Moyer’s mediums are acrylic, glitter, pigment, raw canvas and gloss varnishes. Her crisp forms evoke prehistoric goddess statues, rock formations and ceramic vessels, all plays on the female body. Bleeds of shiny red and translucent pours of colour suggest natural streams, menstrual blood and the male-dominated history of formalist painting. She incorporates printing methods onto the canvases, though monoprint batik-like transfers or simple finger and hand prints refer to cave painting and the feminist paintings of the 1970s artist Harmony Hammond.

Moyer builds up her layers of paint like strata from the earthy, raw canvas base, and each layer is deliberately chosen with its own set of historical, stylistic and physical references.

Two canvases by Carrie Moyer will be exhibted at the David Krut Projects booth at the Johannesburg Art Fair opening March 13th, and this will be the first time her work has been shown in South Africa. Hairy Beeker and Jughead employ vessel-type forms, oil lamps or ancient urns dramatically cut out against the matte dark ground. Nipples, bras and undergarments form decorative elements and structures and testify to Moyer’s wicked sense of humour.

David Krut Projects New York recently acquired two giant new paintings by Moyer: Tender Star and Avatars (both 84 X 68″).
