Moyer builds up her layers of paint like strata from the earthy, raw canvas base, and each layer is deliberately chosen with its own set of historical, stylistic and physical references. Two canvases by Carrie Moyer will be exhibted at the David Krut Projects booth at the Johannesburg Art Fair opening March 13th, and this will be the first time her work has been shown in South Africa. Hairy Beeker and Jughead employ vessel-type forms, oil lamps or ancient urns dramatically cut out against the matte dark ground. Nipples, bras and undergarments form decorative elements and structures and testify to Moyer’s wicked sense of humour. David Krut Projects New York recently acquired two giant new paintings by Moyer: Tender Star and Avatars (both 84 X 68″). |
