Stephen Antonakos

25th April 2008 | Other items by Guest Author

David Krut, Kate McCrickard and Sophia Carroll recently visited artist Stephen Antonakos in his New York studio, to plan the exhibition of his work coming up this fall at David Krut Projects, New York.

Best known for his grand-scale neon sculptures, including numerous public installations throughout the United States and Europe, Antonakos also creates drawings and smaller neon sculptures of striking simplicity and beauty. Color, light and material are delicately manipulated until a series of line drawings, some slightly snipped or cut, others with folds or crumpled edges, inspires new ways of seeing the dimensionality and texture of not only his material, but light itself.

Antonakos was born in Greece but moved to New York when he was four years old. Though he considers himself an American artist, Greece remains a powerful influence in his life. He represented Greece at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997, and he and his wife Naomi return every year.
