Ryan Arenson, at the Workshop, experimenting for the first-time with the pochoir printing technique. Pochoir - French for ’stencilling’ - is a class of print which is usually made by carefully hand-colouring through a series of highly detailed cut-out stencils, leaving a raised area on the picture surface, further depth being added to the image through the re-application of stencils to create a highly-detailed image. Dating back to the fifteenth century, the pochoir technique had its heyday in the art nouveau and deco Paris of the 1920s. Requiring great patience and attention to detail, the technique is only utilised by the most fastidious artists. |
