Above Left: Booth G13 at the Cape Town Book Fair. Above Right: Tyrone Appollis and Grethe Fox. Booth G13 at the Cape Town Book Fair was a site of remarkable collaborative energy, as it could only have been with the David Krut Publishing team. As with any trade fair, the commotion of activity created by industry people and the public alike makes for an exciting and energetic environment, in which the inevitable end result is successful networking to establish creative relationships.
For David Krut Publishing, the connection made with industry specialists such as Singapore-based printers, Dominie Press, esteemed for their creativity and the extraordinary design of their publications, was particularly exciting and may lead to interesting collaboration, between Dominie and David Krut Projects, New York.
Our range of books from Assouline – the specialist publishers of beautiful books relating to the fashion and design industries – fared particularly well at the Book Fair. Assouline titles include luxury editions, such as Racing Style, which comes in a book holder modelled to look like tyre tread. Not only are the Assouline titles renowned for their unusual photographic content and insights into the creative processes behind the objects we love to love, but their exquisite gift-like packaging turns them into art objects in their own right. Visit the Assouline website for more detailed information on the full range of Assouline titles.
Also very popular was our collection of international, design-oriented magazines such as Icon, iDN (see also Vol15.1 and Vol15.2), and Architectural Review. It seems that Capetonians are not only fascinated with beautiful books but are also keen readers of international magazines, most of which are not readily available in South Africa.
David Krut, Bronwyn Law-Viljoen and Alastair Whitton were again in attendance this year, and the Book Fair provided a good opportunity for the team, including newcomers Marie Van Niekerk, Jacqui Landey and myself, to catch up. I will be based in Cape Town and Marie and Jacqui will soon be jet-setting off to New York and London respectively so the time spent together was very important for all of us. As always, the Cape Town team felt revitalised (though perhaps slightly exhausted) by the presence of the Joburg team in the fair Cape. We were able to plan a number of new initiatives to which we will draw your attention in the weeks to come. Left: Revel Fox, Grethe Fox, Alastair Whitton, Bronwyn Law-Viljoen and David Krut. Right: The three newcomers (from left to right), Marie Van Niekerk, Jacqui Landey and Jacqueline Nurse. |
