TAEP at the Soweto Festival’s Youth Zone

3rd September 2008 | Other items by Theo

David Krut Arts Resource (DK Arts) is pleased to announce that we will participate in this year’s Soweto Festival. As an integral part of DK Arts, the Taxi Art Education Programme (TAEP) and its facilitators have prepared an insightful, educational and highly entertaining programme for the festival’s Youth Zone. The programme will include drama, dance, music, performance and poetry, as well as panels and workshops on careers, creative writing, entrepreneurship and much more!

TAEP is an outreach initiative to bring the arts to youth in Johannesburg and Soweto. The facilitators teach drawing, music and performance and organise events, including exhibitions and book launches. Their aim is to promote creative communication and to give facilitators the opportunity of beginning a career in the arts.

The TAEP theatre group, with guidance from the seasoned actor, Andre Stolz , recently toured to the National Arts Festival Fringe in Grahamstown. Stolz, who has been a theatre practitioner for thirty years, will direct the Soweto Festival Youth Zone programme alongside Solomon Mabengeza , Ricky Bopape and the TAEP team. The programme is a collaboration with Adele Lucas Promotions and is sponsored by Standard Bank.

Addressing contemporary social problems such as drug abuse, train surfing and AIDS, the programme promotes awareness of these issues and provides young people with guidance in terms of career choices, education and healthy living. We hope that you will support us in this endeavour to uplift local youth communities.

The festival runs from 24 - 28 September at the Soweto campus of the University of Johannesburg in Old Potch Road. The Youth Zone programme follows:
