TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT:

Belonging and Displacement in the work of South African Video Artists

This video screening, curated by Leora Farber, Lee-At Meyerov and Lucy Rayner features eight works by South African artists dealing with their negotiated relationships to Johannesburg, and in particular, the inner city. Participating in the ‘Performing South Africa Festival’ in Berlin this September, David Krut Projects in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg and the Hebbel Theatre was proud to present the work of Steven Cohen, Theresa Collins, Stephen Hobbs, Nadine Hutton, William Kentridge, Anthea Moys, Sam Nhlengethwa, Mocke Jansen van Veuren and Minnette Vári. A version of the programme was initially screened as part of the ‘Johannesburg and Megacities Phenomena’ colloquium, hosted by the University of Johannesburg’s Research Centre, ‘Visual Identities in Art and Design’, in April 2008.

It now comes to the Goethe-Institut for a one-night event and will be accompanied by the launch of the publication ‘Representation and Spatial Practices in Urban South Africa’ - a full-colour volume of articles and photo-essays, edited by Leora Farber and published by the Research Centre. The volume explores thematics which emerged fom the colloquium, namely, representation of the urban, with particular focus on Johannesburg and certain spatial, social and political dimentions of South African cities.

Guest speaker: Hilton Judin

Curator of the watershed South African architecture exhibition ‘blank_Architecture, Apartheid and After’, 1998 - Judin is a visiting professor in the WITS Architecture Department and was an advisor to the Johannesburg and Megacities Phenomena colloquium.
