Light on a Hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa

When the new Constitutional Court of South Africa was officially opened in 2004 it caused a stir in the legal and architectural fraternities. It was built on the site of the notorious Old Fort Prison that had once held Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela and was an unlikely building for a court.

LIGHT ON A HILL: BUILDING THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF SOUTH AFRICA

The new Constitutional Court of South Africa was inaugurated in 2004, ten years after the demise of apartheid and South Africa’s first democratic elections that brought the African National Congress and Nelson Mandela to power. The historic new building was the work of a team of young South African architects who had won the international competition for the design and building of the Court.

“Light on a hill” finalisation of a book.

The David Krut team set out for the constitutional court in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The team consisted of David Krut (publisher), Adele (graphic artist) Bronwyn (editor), Cara (publicist), Nicolette (copywriter) and Bazukile (junior writer).

The objective of the trip was to finalise the book cover and to strategies how to market the book Light on a hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa which deals with the architectural aspects of the building and the story behind the design.
