Night of a Thousand Stars and Other Portraits of Iraq

Night of a Thousand Stars documents – in text and photographs – life in Iraq before and after the U.S. invasion in 2003. Joel Preston Smith traveled in central and northern Iraq as an independent journalist, living with Iraqis and Kurds, and patrolling with U.S. soldiers. His book is the first comprehensive portrait of Iraqi society in a time of war, as seen from the perspective of both Iraqis and U.S. soldiers. But this is not a book of military and political analysis; Night of a Thousand Stars is a humanistic portrait, focusing heavily on Iraqi home, work and social life during the occupation.

Imprint

I went back to Japan after seven years of absence, from north to south I traveled the country through the lens: images distorted, images real, only imprints remain today. . . years ago and years ahead perhaps, this Japan travels inside me like a long bamboo path.

Calais Lace

Since 1993 Michael Kenna has visited Calais many times and wandered at length throughout the town, photographing its urban landscapes and its proud industrious heart: the lace factories. On his first visit he met Annette Haudiquet, then head curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle. It was during this meeting that the idea for the book Calais Lace, and the exhibition it accompanies, was born.

Central to the explosion of creativity in New York’s SoHo in the 1970s, Matta-Clark turned his focus on the city itself, slicing through abandoned buildings to create works that were at once large-scale sculptural environments, social commentary and urban performance pieces.

Memories Of A Dog

Daido Moriyama is without question one of Japan’s most important contemporary photographers and it is not surprising that this memoir, first published as a series of essays in Asahi Camera twenty-one years ago, is regarded as a classic in photographic literature. In Memories of a Dog, Moriyama approaches photography through language, and it is difficult to say which is the more evocative medium.

Zeche Westfahlen l/ll Ahlen

Documentary evidence exists of 700 years of coal mining in the Ruhr District of Germany, one of Europe’s largest and most densely populated industrial regions. To this day, approximately 9.6 billion tons of hard coal have been mined in the state of North-Rhine-Westphalia. On June 30, 2000, almost 100 years of mining history came to an end in Ahlen with the closure of the Zeche Westfahlen, which had been opened in 1902 with the inauguration of the Bergwerkgesellschaft Westfahlen.

A Fourfold Vision

After treasuring the exeperience of having known Ralph Eugene Meatyard at the turn of the 1970s and then holding hs work in the highest esteem for the whole of my adult lide, it is a sobeing joy to revisit these spontaneous, imaginative and transcendent photographs again, thirty years later. Of course the world had changed and i have changed too, but the photographs themselves continue to speak to us of a world beyond the one we normally see.
