Taxi Art Books
TAXI ART BOOKS is a series of titles on contemporary South African artists. Each book is accompanied by an educational supplement. The series aims to extend the profile of South African artists and the visual arts, both locally and abroad, and to develop an active educational programme and teaching resource archive. The books are published by David Krut Publishing, Johannesburg and the project is supported by The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), The Royal Netherlands Embassy, Pro-Helvetia - Arts Council of Switzerland, The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, The National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) and David Krut Arts Resource. The project was initiated in 2000 and has continues to be an important resource for the contemporary visual arts and arts education.
An independent advisory committee is appointed each year to select a group of artists who have created a substantial body of work, but have no monograph published on their art. A new author is commissioned to write the text for each book and the project has also created opportunities for book design and other related skills which were not previously available in the arts.
Each title in the series is published together with a TAXI Art Educational Supplement which has been researched and mostly written by Philippa Hobbs.
These supplements contain worksheets for art students and guidelines for teachers. They are designed specifically for broad subject integration in senior high school curricula and can be adapted for informal art training as well as tertiary institutions.
